Kushimoto Station to Shionomisaki: lighthouse and headland
SLOW TRAVEL NOTES
The Southernmost Point of Honshu, Not of Japan
On a map, the end of the land is a tiny dot. At Shionomisaki that dot has wind, a white lighthouse and an open sea. You need not keep adding destinations to feel that you have traveled a long way. Look at the water from the lighthouse and then from the open headland, taking time for both.
Use a bus available on your date or arrange a taxi from JR Kushimoto Station. This 10:00–15:00 outline is an editorial example, not a train or bus timetable. Visit the lighthouse in the morning, rest over lunch and continue to Boro-no-Shiba before returning. Since March 2026 the lighthouse closes 12:00–13:00; arrive comfortably before the morning admission cutoff at 11:45.

Photos show 2013 and 2015 scenery, not current access or facility operation. Check weather, lighthouse access and the return journey. Shorten in strong wind, rain or restrictions. Admission to the tourism tower is not a required part of this itinerary.

The town describes roughly 100,000m² of grassland. This is separate from the lighthouse: allow time to move between them and view from accessible land-side areas. It is the southernmost point of Honshu, not Japan. Tower admission and events are optional.

EDITORIAL NOTE
The Southernmost Point of Honshu, Not of Japan
Shionomisaki is at the southern end of Honshu. Kushimoto Town describes Boro-no-Shiba as roughly 100,000m² of grassland, named after a former lookout. Come for the open view, staying on paths currently open to visitors rather than entering cliffs or shore rocks.
