Time Written in Rock: A Half-Day from Koza Station to Ichimaiiwa

About 20 minutes by car or taxi from Koza Station, Ichimaiiwa rises beside the Koza River. View the roughly 100m-high, 500m-wide monolith from across the water and pause at the roadside station. Arrange transport both ways; this is not an all-walking route.

Koza Station to Ichimaiiwa: a view across the river

SLOW TRAVEL NOTES

One Landscape, Rather Than More Stops

Across the river stands what looks like an immense wall. At first you read it as part of a mountain; then you realize you are looking at one rock. That shift in scale changes the river below it, too. Its name is quite literal: Ichimaiiwa, a single slab of rock. The landscape itself gives you a reason to make the detour.

Begin at JR Koza Station with a car, taxi or other round-trip transport already arranged. Official guides give about 20 minutes by car from the station. The 10:00–14:00 outline is editorial, not a train or taxi timetable, and it does not connect everything on foot. Spend your time looking at rock and river from places currently open, without entering the water.

EDITORIAL NOTE

One Landscape, Rather Than More Stops

Ichimaiiwa is a national natural monument. Kozagawa’s tourism association describes it as roughly 100m high and 500m wide. Take a break at the roadside station and move your gaze between the current, vertical lines in the rock and surrounding green. This half-day is about looking again, rather than covering more ground.
