Plan the return journey at Kii-Tanabe Station

Before setting off, check your return train and the weather. Pick up a town map at the tourist information center by the station, travel light and bring water and comfortable shoes. Your first stop is Tokei Shrine.

There is no need to walk every kilometer to the sea. The point is to enjoy both places without rushing. Arrange the outward taxi and a clear return meeting place now, so the afternoon does not depend on finding a passing cab.

Use the Tanabe Tourism Association’s Tenjinzaki page to check its tide chart and viewing calendar first. Move the town walk and lunch around the suitable coastal window. Arrange the return pickup as well as the outward ride, and plan to leave the shore before dark.

Tokei Shrine

Visit Tokei Shrine and its Kumano connections

Pass through the large torii and pause before the shrine buildings. A short visit changes the pace of the day, even here in town. Tokei Shrine is part of a World Heritage property and has long-standing connections with Kumano worship.

Its name is associated with a story in which Tanzo used red and white fighting cocks to divine which side to support in the Genpei conflict. Enjoy this as a tradition handed down at the shrine, rather than a proven account of events. Read the signs and keep worshippers’ routes clear when taking photographs.

Michiwake-ishi in Kitashinmachi

Explore the shopping streets and find Michiwake-ishi

Head back toward the station area and explore Minato Hondori and the Kitashinmachi shopping streets. Shopfronts and streetlights reward a slower pace. Michiwake-ishi in Kitashinmachi marks the historical branching of the Nakahechi and Ohechi routes—a reminder that pilgrimage also ran through everyday town life.

The photograph of Aoi Street is another Tanabe streetscape, taken years ago; it does not imply that the same businesses operate today. Drop into somewhere inviting if it is open, or simply try another street. Stay out of private homes and workplaces, and leave room for everyday life to continue.

Lunch in town before deciding on the coast

Choose lunch from businesses open that day around the station or shopping streets. Reading a menu and checking the price at the door suits this flexible walk better than insisting on one particular dish. Discuss food allergies before ordering.

After eating, check the tide and wind again. If conditions are unsuitable, enjoy a café stop in town and return to the station. A photograph is not a reason to approach a rough coastline.

Tenjinzaki

Head to Tenjinzaki when conditions allow

13:30 is only a sample transfer slot. Change your actual visit to suit the tide and weather. Tenjinzaki lies on the north side of Tanabe Bay, with wooded hills beside flat intertidal rocks. It is also associated with National Trust conservation that protects land and sea together.

The celebrated reflections form in water left on the rocks. Low tide alone does not guarantee them: wind, rain and swell change the surface too. Look at the shapes of the greenery and water rather than chasing a predetermined photograph.

Rising water submerges the rocks. Do not venture offshore while concentrating on your camera; viewing from safe land is perfectly worthwhile. Omit the coast in high waves, strong winds, thunder or other hazardous conditions, and follow local restrictions and warnings. Leave living creatures and stones where they are and take your litter away.

Return to Kii-Tanabe Station by booked taxi

Meet the taxi at the agreed place and return to the station. Treat 15:00 as a planning allowance rather than a deadline: adjust it to the tide, daylight and your train. Confirm the pickup location clearly and do not rely on a taxi passing the coast.

The morning follows old paths through town; the afternoon follows changes in the sea. Remembering those streets on the ride back is a fine way to finish this small but varied journey.
