SLOW TRAVEL NOTES
Give a short trail a half-day’s breathing room.
Meet a small stone figure in the forest, then descend toward a village. This section lets you connect woodland, stone steps and the valley settlement without attempting an entire day across Kumano’s mountains. Pause by the statue, notice the path and enjoy the moment the view opens.
Take a checked bus to Gyuba-doji-guchi and return from Chikatsuyu-oji. This10:00–14:00 editorial plan includes pauses, worship and lunch. The approximately30-minute walking estimate excludes those stops and bus waiting. Short does not mean flat: there is an ascent and a stone staircase.

The Gyuba-doji statue is introduced as depicting retired Emperor Kazan on a cow and horse. Treat the sculpture and local story as interpretation, not proof of his exact journey. This is not a walk to Hongu. Photos show2006/2013 scenery, not current access.
