At the Gateway to Kumano: A Short Visit to Takijiri-oji

SLOW TRAVEL NOTES

You can discover the gateway without climbing the mountain.

A pilgrimage is not measured only by distance. Pass through Takijiri’s stone arch and the small shrine beneath the trees hints at the long journey ahead. Today, stay at the gateway: notice the lettering on stone, the shade and the quiet around the shrine.

This editorial 10:00–14:00 plan combines the shrine, nearby public paths, an optional visitor-centre visit and lunch. Reach Takijiri by a checked bus from JR Kii-Tanabe. The climb to Takahara needs separate time and equipment; it is not an extra stroll in this plan.

Takijiri to Takahara is about 4 km, taking 2–3 hours on a steep mountain trail. That hike is excluded. Mind steps, wet ground, road crossings and restrictions. The photos show 2006 scenery, not current access.

EDITORIAL NOTE
