SLOW TRAVEL NOTES
Enjoy the walk from the station too
For half a day in Kokawa, walk from JR Kokawa Station through the temple town to Kokawadera, look at the large garden stones and main hall, then return. The temple’s official access guide estimates about 15 minutes from the station; the Saikoku 33 association describes roughly 800 m to Daimon. Our 10:00–14:00 outline is an editorial estimate with detours and lunch.
The path from station to temple is part of the day. Slow down beside a building, pass through a gate, then look up at the roof. By the garden’s large stones, the town suddenly feels farther away. A short journey can connect quite different scenes.

Kokawa Station
From Kokawa Station into town
Check your return train at Kokawa Station before walking into town. The temple gives about 15 minutes from this JR Wakayama Line station, and the pilgrimage association roughly 800 m to Daimon. The 25 minutes here includes editorial allowance for pauses.
Looking at buildings and signs does not assume any shop is open. Prioritize traffic when crossing, stay off private property and enjoy the streets from public paths.
These are historical photographs, not a promise of flowers, foliage or access. Streets and grounds have steps and are not a flat accessible route. Reduce detours if tired and leave time for the train.

Daimon and the approach
At Daimon, look beyond the gate toward the approach. This is where town becomes temple. The association identifies Daimon, Chumon, the main hall and Senjudo as nationally designated Important Cultural Properties.
Leave space for worshippers and photograph from a place where you can stop safely. Do not cross barriers to inspect carving. Seeing the gates in sequence helps reveal the depth of the grounds.

Large stones in Kokawadera garden
The garden’s large stones may be the first surprise. The city and pilgrimage association describe this dry-landscape garden as a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty. Study individual stones, then include planting and buildings in the wider view.
Remain on designated paths rather than entering the stones or planted areas. Historical photographs do not promise the same flowers or leaves. Check your footing near steps before stopping.

Main hall exterior and optional inner hall
Look up at the main hall’s roof from outside first. Decide whether to enter the inner hall according to your energy, time and the day’s instructions. Walking the grounds and inner-hall viewing have different charges.
The city and association list free grounds access and JPY 400 per person for the inner hall. The association lists 8:00–17:00 visiting hours. Special openings and events follow separate notices; no particular display is guaranteed. Check local photography and footwear rules.

A final grounds walk and return
Before leaving, notice trees and smaller halls from open paths. The pictures include the Donando exterior and a camphor tree; they do not mean the itinerary guarantees entry to individual halls. Give worship and ceremonies their space.
Leave time to retrace the walk and check the train from Kokawa. This is a station-based walking route, not a plan tied to an old bus timetable. If tired, shorten this detour and return to town sooner.

Lunch around the temple town
Choose lunch around the temple town or station from currently open businesses and menus. No seat or reservation at a named shop is promised. If timing does not work, move lunch to the journey home rather than rushing for a train.
Food and drinks JPY 1,500–3,000 is an editorial estimate; rail, inner-hall admission and shopping are extra. Hours, fees, access and transport can change. Check official information before setting out for your half-day in town.

What to notice along the way
Connect station, town and gate
Walk through the temple town without rushing.
See the stone garden from different angles
Notice stones, planting and buildings together.
Look up at the main hall
Plan exterior viewing and inner-hall admission separately.

EDITORIAL NOTE
Enjoy the walk from the station too
A photograph of the main hall alone misses the transition from town to temple. Arriving on foot makes the scale of the gates and quiet of the grounds more noticeable. Shift your gaze from garden stones to the roof and the scene changes again.
