Before you set off
This guide provides concrete criteria for deciding how to allocate your time and what to prioritize on a fast-paced 5-day Golden Route itinerary.
How the day unfolds
Before you set off
This 5-day Golden Route itinerary takes you from Tokyo, through Hakone, Kyoto, and Nara, culminating in Osaka. It’s an efficient journey utilizing the Shinkansen (bullet train) to experience Japan’s energetic modern cities, Hakone’s rich natural landscapes, and the profound history of Kyoto and Nara.
This plan is an active trip with daily city-to-city travel. As time in each city is limited, you won’t be able to visit every famous spot. Deciding in advance what to see and what to skip, based on your interests, is key to a satisfying experience.
This itinerary is best suited for travelers with good stamina who enjoy navigating public transportation. Conversely, if you prefer to stay longer in one place or wish to minimize travel burden, consider customizing the plan to focus on just two to three cities.
This 5-day plan is a fast-paced journey through Japan’s major cities. The key to a fulfilling trip isn’t to conquer every single spot, but to adjust your time in each location and even decide which places to skip, all based on your personal interests.
Made for
- Energetic travelers in their 20s-30s who want to see major cities in one trip
- Active trips for friends or couples

A different plan may suit
- Travelers who want to spend more than 3 days exploring a single city in depth

- Visitors who wish to spend a full day thoroughly exploring museums and art galleries

Getting around
Tokyo’s main gateways are Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). From Narita, the JR Narita Express takes about 60 minutes to Tokyo Station (approx. 3,000 JPY). From Haneda, the Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa Station in about 15 minutes (approx. 300 JPY), providing access to the city center. From Kansai International Airport (KIX), the JR Limited Express Haruka takes about 80 minutes to Kyoto Station (approx. 3,000 JPY) and about 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka Station (approx. 2,500 JPY). Limousine buses also operate from each airport to city centers and major stations. For the latest travel information, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) website (jnto.go.jp) is a helpful resource.
The standard Shinkansen (bullet train) fare for this 5-day route (Tokyo → Hakone → Kyoto → Osaka) totals approximately 17,000 JPY. A 7-day JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass) costs about 50,000 JPY, making it difficult to justify the cost for this itinerary alone. Even including urban travel, purchasing individual tickets for each segment will likely be more economical. Considering a JR Pass is only practical if combined with other itineraries involving extensive long-distance travel.

Before you go
Your existing smartphone’s roaming plan might suffice. If data usage is a concern, make use of free Wi-Fi available at stations, cafes, and hotels. Downloading offline maps of the areas you plan to visit on Google Maps can help you navigate without an internet connection. As smartphone battery life can drain quickly while exploring, carrying a portable charger is highly recommended.
Traveling with large suitcases can be cumbersome. In such cases, Yamato Transport’s "Takkyubin" luggage delivery service is convenient. For example, sending a 160-size suitcase from a hotel in Tokyo to one in Osaka costs approximately 2,500 JPY and usually arrives the next day. Shipping your luggage from your hotel front desk or a nearby convenience store in the morning allows you to enjoy sightseeing unencumbered.
While vegetarian and vegan restaurants are increasing, especially in urban areas, options can still be limited. Using specialized apps or websites like "HappyCow" is the most reliable way to find them. When choosing onigiri or bento at convenience stores, refer to the allergy information on the ingredient labels. Halal-certified meals are even more challenging to find, so it is strongly recommended to list specialized restaurants in advance.
Start your day early at Tsukiji to soak in the lively market atmosphere. In the afternoon, transition from the hustle of Shibuya to the sophisticated streets of Ginza. On your first day, avoid over-scheduling; taking time for quiet reflection at Meiji Jingu Shrine is key to a pleasant start to your trip.
The illuminated Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, viewed from the rooftop of KITTE Marunouchi.
Beginning your day in lively Tsukiji, then finding tranquility in the city’s green oasis before heading to the lively areas of Shibuya and Ginza, allows you to experience Tokyo’s diverse character more fully.
If it rains or you feel tired, consider shortening your outdoor activities at Meiji Jingu Shrine and Ginza. Instead, relax at a cafe or commercial complex in Shibuya.
For popular restaurants like Gyukatsu Motomura that often have long lines, check social media for real-time waiting times or ticket distribution information on your planned visit day to ensure a smoother experience.
Starting with the historic atmosphere of Asakusa, this itinerary takes you through Ueno and Akihabara to the heart of Tokyo. Experience Tokyo’s diverse facets in one day. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, consider shortening your time in Akihabara to fully enjoy the views around Tokyo Station.
The moment you look down at the illuminated red-brick Tokyo Station from the Marunouchi Building observation deck at dusk.
This order visits Asakusa during the less crowded morning hours and moves south along the Yamanote Line to optimize travel efficiency.
Alternatively, you could extend your time strolling through Ueno Park and shorten your visit to Akihabara.
Before your visit, check the official websites for opening hours and visitor guidelines for Senso-ji Temple, Ueno Park, and Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building.
